On Thursday night I headed to the Nintendisco. A trip which was long overdue. A monthly retro gaming event with a bar, in the city of London!? Yes please!
My mates and I were all wondering what kind of crowd we'd be greeted with. Lots of geeky guys, a girl who looks like Ramona from Scott Pilgrim, a girl who looks like a Koopa Troopa with glasses and one ridiculously beautiful girl who had been dragged to the event by her boyfriend and was only there just because. Boy, were we wrong. Well,there were lots of geeky guys... And there was a girl who indeed looked like Ramona ... And that beautiful girl who had been dragged by her boyfr- Okay, so we were right. But there was still a great mix of people which went beyond the obvious expectational turnout and stereotypes of such an event. Some were there specifically because it was a gaming themed event. And some were just there because it was free entry and the atmosphere was different from your regular Thursday night hang out spot.
You don't have to be a gamer to enjoy the Nintendisco. If like me you're not keen on sitting in a pub with every flat screen TV tuned into Sky sports - then the alternative is the Nintendisco. A pub / club / tourney like atmosphere with a giant projector showing gamers going at it on old skool SNES classics and a DJ playing an oddly diverse-yet cohesive mix of Hip-Hop, 80's cartoon theme songs and obscure remixes of video game songs.
The event is still in its infancy, but it shows promise. And it'll be great to see it become bigger and eventually take over more of the 93 feet east venue. I dream of a room where the DJ spins nothing but VG music and the dancefloor is chock-a-block of people busting shapes like Tetris blocks. But I know this will always stay a dream. But the Nitnendisco folk have full license to make it a reality. Shit...they're already on the path to doing so.
