She came into work less jubilant than normal. Answered the phone more frequently than normal. Her desk was oddly void of post its. Her tray was empty. Her laptop was closed. Her power charger neatly tied and placed on the desk beside her. She hadn't brought in her usual assortment of tupperwares packed with an array of snacks which borders on being a portable pick 'n mix. Oddly quiet and detached. For today was her last day.
As a senior member of staff made their speech and office gifts were imparted, she began to cry. And it was at this moment the realization hit us all. She loved her job. She really was not prepared to go. And as we stood and watched her lose a battle against her own tears, a collective thought had hit. We had more of a connection to her than we realized, and it took to see her standing in tears for us to realize it.
Goodbyes aren't endings. But preludes to a new beginning. When the tears dry for long enough, she'll come to see it. And if all goes well, she'll forget the upset she felt this day.
