One breezy Monday evening as I was stood on the platform at Bond street station and listened to Boris Johnson's utterly un-enthusiastic announcement about the London 2012 Olympic games, it got me thinking: Mayor's these days have no sense of style. No sense of flair. I went through a cycle of thoughts of how I would dress and present myself if I were the mayor of London. I drew much all of my inspiration from Coming to America. Residing with the thought that if I were a mayor, I'd dress like this.
I could pull this off effortlessly and flawlessly for 2 reasons:
a) I'm black
b) I don't care what you think
Mayor's these days have no sense of grandiosity. Boris Johnson walks around looking like an Aryan who was transported into the year 2000 via worm hole and then got pushed into a Marks & Spencer's bargain rail. Taking no time to sort the hair which looks like a ransacked chicken's nest.
Nothing Boris wears says 'I run this bitch'. But my King Jaffe Joffer outfit would. Of course the fur on my outfit would be real too. It's important that residents see a mayor and are unable to relate to him what-so-ever. It may defeat the object of being a mayor. After all, it's how 'the people' relate. But a mayor will never live like a common city dweller. And given Boris' expenses scandal, it's clear he doesn't have the same financial hang-ups many of us regular working folk have.
A mayor's style is an overlooked aspect of many mayors. Fuck the taxes and the transport. It's all about hitting Selfridges and buying suits, and fur from extinct animals. Full price and flaunting that shit.
King Jaffe Joffer is not just inspiration. It's a way of life. I want dat life.
