The Glico man is quite possibly the most famous man in Japan. Even more famous than SMAP. He's retained massive popularity since 1935 and his smile has stayed smiley and his lights has stayed flashy-flashy and eye blindingly bright ever since. He has been whoring Japan's attention long before Kumi Koda came along and started opening her legs in music videos on Space shower TV.
There are many things in Japan which could be deemed 'a symbol of Japan', but the Glico man is not one of them. To call him the symbol of Japan would be too generalised. More specifically, he is a symbol of Osaka. Posing proudly over the Dotonbori river to greet locals, holiday makers, pimps and hoes, each and every night; with him having rarely taken a day off.
I've seen the Glico man 3 times. My second visit made me feel warm and fuzzy inside, which was probably the Summer heat causing the fluids inside me to boil. And even though I had already gotten a picture of myself mimicking the Glico man's winning pose with him framed in shot behind me back in 2008, I insisted on getting the same picture taken on my second visit to Japan in 2012 and again on my third visit in 2013. he just has that irresistible allure which causes you to want to whip out your camera, hand it to somebody and make them take a picture of you with your arms in the air like you just do not care.
